The Importance of Being Amazed about Absolutely Everything*Posted: 24 November 2010
Tomorrow I am off to the deepest wilds of Somerset to attend a party for ‘Hogswatch’ – the Discworld equivalent of Christmas. The Discworld, of course, having been created by the inspirational and downright hilarious man in the video below. This week Terry Pratchett gave his first lecture as a professor at Dublin’s Trinity College, a feat which makes his other achievements (such as the Carnegie medal and the knighthood) pale into insignificance.
I’m relatively new to the million-strong posse surrounding the man in the hat but I would say the reasons why I’m dragging myself all the way down and across the country to attend a party based on a fictional event in his books are found in this lecture**. If you haven’t read any of his books, you’re missing out; and if you have, you’re probably one of the other idiots converging on a small town in Somerset this weekend!
* I love the title. I just had to borrow it.
** I’m so made over that he mentions that his first fantasy book was The Wind in the Willows. It was one of mine, too!
